Starting October 7, the Humberto Delgado airport, in Lisbon, and Washington Dulles International Airport will host a world-class exhibit of works by 15 contemporary Portuguese artists, titled "Arte Box: Unboxing Portuguese contemporary culture".
In Washington, the exhibition will feature pieces from the collection of the Luso-American Foundation for Development by Pedro Cabrita Reis, António Sena, Pepe Diniz, João Queiroz, Luisa Correia Pereira and Ana Hatherly and two works by Júlio Pomar, provided by the Collection Caixa Geral de Depósitos.
Alongside works by emerging artists, such as André Araújo, Ânia Pais, Diana Mordido Aires, Maria Contreras, Nuno Sousa and Sally Santiago, with pieces focused on art and science, there will also be works by internationally renowned artists such as Marta de Menezes and Vasco Gargalo.
In Portugal, the initiative includes artists from different parts of the country, aiming to showcase its great artistic diversity. From Alcobaça, Carolina Correia, Cheila Peças, Gabriel and Gilberto Colaço, José Aurélio, Luis Plácido Costa and Thierry Ferreira; from Cascais, Ana Sério and Mónica Capucho; Leiria is represented by Abílio Febra, Mário Lopes, Rita Gaspar and Sílvia Patrício; Vanda Lopes Palma and Joana Santos represent the Era uma Voz Association, from Alentejo. Also participating will be photographer Jordi Burch and writer Ondjaki, with the exhibition “There's a beautiful braid in that dance of yours”, promoting a unique dialogue between photography and literature.
The exhibition, which runs until April 7, 2023, aims to boost the internationalisation of arts professionals, facilitating their entry into a competitive and difficult-to-access market such as North America, as well as promoting renowned national artists, and the Portugal brand as a cultural tourist destination.
The inauguration took place in Washington, with the presence of Portugal's Secretary of State for Internationalisation, Bernardo Ivo Cruz, the Portuguese Ambassador in Washington, Francisco Duarte Lopes, and the delegate of the Portuguese Trade & Investment Agency (AICEP) in the United States, Joao Mota Pinto.
