Portugal is a perfect destination for those who enjoy contemplating the night sky, observing stars, planets and constellations.
The country offers excellent conditions for astronomical observation, especially in Portugal's three Starlight destinations: Alqueva, Aldeias do Xisto and Tua Valley. So, take a look at this Astrotourism itinerary in Portugal and let yourself be dazzled by the nights of clear skies.
Alqueva: the world's first Starlight destination
The Great Lake of Alqueva was the first destination in the world to receive the Starlight Tourism Destination Certification quality seal, awarded by the Starlight foundation, with the support of UNESCO.
The village of Cumeada is located in southern Portugal in the Reguengos de Monsaraz area. There, you can visit the official Dark Sky Observatory, which has state-of-the-art telescopes for solar and astronomical observation. There is also a small museum where you can observe a meteorite, or see the autograph of the last astronaut to go to the moon. There is also a permanent exhibition of astrophotography by Miguel Claro.

Aldeias do Xisto: a stargazing paradise
In the central region of Portugal, the Aldeias do Xisto or “shale villages” were the second destination to receive the "Starlight Tourist Destination” international certification. These beautiful villages extend along the Lousã, Açor, Zêzere and Tejo-Ocreza Mountains.
The Arganil, Góis, Lousã, Miranda do Corvo, Oliveira do Hospital, Pampilhosa da Serra and Penela areas are therefore part of Dark Sky Aldeias do Xisto. Here, the sky's darkness ensures excellent conditions for observing stars, galaxies and constellations.
The Aldeias do Xisto territory offers a diversified range of accommodation and experiences within the scope of Astrotourism. Try a night tour in a canoe on the Santa Luzia Dam – a two-kilometre trip of about one hour's duration. This initiation canoeing programme is a great way to discover the dark sky of Pampilhosa da Serra with your family or friends. If you prefer, you can just observe the night sky with the help of a guide.
After enjoying the dark and starry skies of the Aldeias do Xisto, spend the day discovering the stunning natural landscapes and traditional culture of the 27 schist villages.

Tua Valley: a protected area to observe the night sky
After Alqueva and Aldeias do Xisto, the Tua Valley Regional Natural Park was the third place in Portugal to be awarded the "Starlight Tourist Destination" certification – and the first protected area to receive this distinction.
In the Alijó, Carrazeda de Ansiães, Mirandela, Murça and Vila Flor districts, you will discover places that are absolutely amazing for stargazing. Set off on an incredible night-time adventure and make the most of your stay in the region to discover the archaeological heritage, culture, cuisine and natural landscape of the Tua Valley.
Those who enjoy nature walks can explore the region’s network of Short Distance Hikes and for birdwatching enthusiasts, there are countless species to discover, such as the Eagle Owl, the Crag Martin, the Blue Rock Thrush, the Bonelli's Eagle, the Kingfisher, the Golden Eagle, the Egyptian Vulture and the Black Wheatear, among others.
