On February 4, in Lamego, the Douro's mandate as European City of Wine 2023 officially begins. Despite not being a city, but rather a region with 19 municipalities, the Douro won the candidacy for 2023.
It was on June 15 2022, in Brussels, Belgium, that Portugal's Douro region was distinguished as "European Wine City 2023". The region will thus be a European reference in the harmonious celebration of nature and the secular work carried out by generations of Douro residents.
"All Around Wine, All Around Douro" was the motto of the Douro candidacy to become European Wine City 2023, and this award is, according to the Intermunicipal Community of Douro, “one of the most important in the history of the region,” which has been a World Heritage Site since 2001.
Dozens of initiatives are planned throughout the year to promote the region in Europe, and its potential in wine tourism, culture, heritage and wine.
The European Wine City is an annual competition launched by the European Network of Wine Cities (RECEVIN) whose objective is to promote tourism and publicise European wine-producing regions and their cities.
