Portugal's national cuisine is once again in the spotlight. According to TasteAtlas, four Portuguese sweets are among the best-rated pastries in the world - two of which top the list.
In first place in the rankings by TasteAtlas — the world's first interactive food map, detailing dishes and ingredients from all over the world — is the pastel de Bélem. The second place goes to the more widely served pastel de nata (Portuguese custard tart).
Although they are similar, TasteAtlas explains that the two Portuguese pastries cannot be considered the same since the pastel de Belém is only produced at the Fábrica dos Pastéis de Belém, according to a recipe by the monks of the Jerónimos Monastery that dates back to 1837 and remains a well-kept secret to this day.
The pastel de nata, on the other hand, can be eaten in any confectioner's shop or café, and is perhaps the most popular Portuguese sweet, both nationally and internationally.
Taste Atlas is a Croatian-based project founded by journalist and entrepreneur Matija Babić. The list was compiled using critics' reviews and recommendations from gastronomy professionals instead of user-generated content in order to ensure trustworthiness.
